2022 ranked one of the deadliest years on Nevada roads in the past thirty years. Statistically speaking, the majority of these accidents occurred in Las Vegas. In 2023, Nevada accident statistics are headed in the same direction.

According to data released by the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Nevada roads saw 382 fatalities in 2022, only three fewer than the total in 2021. The crash-related deaths were the result of 352 fatal wrecks. Specifically, in Clark County, there was an increase in deadly crashes, with 246 fatalities, up 4 percent from 236 road deaths in 2021.

At Cohan PLLC, we understand that behind these statistics are real people and families devastated by loss and injury. What are the Leading Causes of Car Accidents in Nevada?

Like in many other major cities, car accidents in Las Vegas, Nevada, can be caused by various factors. Some of the chief causes of car accidents include:

  1. Distracted Driving: This is a leading cause of accidents nationwide. Activities like texting, talking on the phone, eating, or using in-car entertainment systems can divert a driver's attention from the road.

  2. Speeding: Driving at speeds higher than the posted speed limits or too fast for road conditions can reduce a driver's reaction time and increase the severity of accidents.

  3. Impaired Driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a significant cause of accidents. Nevada has strict laws against impaired driving, but it remains a problem.

  4. Weather Conditions: Nevada's weather can be unpredictable, with snow and ice in some areas and intense heat in others. Poor weather conditions, mainly when drivers are not accustomed to them, can result in accidents.

  5. Fatigue: Drowsy driving can impair a driver's reaction time and decision-making abilities, making it a significant factor in accidents.

  6. Running Red Lights and Stop Signs: Disobeying traffic signals and signs can lead to dangerous T-bone or side-impact collisions.

  7. Pedestrian and Bicycle Accidents: Places like the Las Vegas Strip can have high pedestrian and bicycle traffic, leading to accidents involving these vulnerable road users.

  8. Motorcycle Accidents: Motorcycles are more vulnerable than cars, and accidents involving motorcycles can be severe. Factors like lack of protective gear or inexperienced riders can contribute to these accidents.

As a result of these accidents, pedestrian deaths in Nevada rose 5 percent from 2021 to 2022, accounting for 88 deaths last year, while cyclist deaths jumped 114 percent, going from seven in 2021 to 15 in 2022. Finally, fatalities tied to vehicle occupants not buckling up rose 5 percent in 2022 from the previous year, with 79 deaths resulting from failing to wear a safety belt.
